Superconducting Tunnel Junction Detectors for Extreme Ultraviolet Applications

چکیده
We present measurements of superconducting tunnel junction (STJ) spectrometers optimized for extreme ultraviolet energies (EUV), between 20–200 eV. The high count rates demands of astronomical applications, such as solar flare studies, uniquely suit STJs as compared to other cryogenic spectrometers. We have simulated EUV measurements with the technique of multiphoton absorption using a pulsed UV laser as a light source. We have demonstrated an energy resolution of 2.15 eV, close to the requirements of the applications. This resolution is limited by amplifier noise. We present predictions of improved resolution based on new amplifier designs.

Multiple junction biasing of superconducting tunnel junction detectors
We describe a biasing scheme for single-photon detectors based on superconducting tunnel junctions. It replaces a single detector junction with a circuit of three junctions and achieves biasing of a detector junction at subgap currents without the use of an external magnetic field. The biasing occurs through the nonlinear interaction of the three junctions, which we demonstrate through numerica...
متن کاملNoise mechanisms in superconducting tunnel-junction detectors
We present a theory and measurements of noise mechanisms in superconducting tunnel-junction detectors used as single-photon spectrometers. These mechanisms result from incomplete cooling of the excited quasiparticles in the tunnel-junction electrode. Due to the incomplete cooling, only a fraction of the initially created charge is collected by tunneling. Additional effects include reduced dynam...
متن کاملQuantum partition noise in a superconducting tunnel junction
The theory of charge partition noise of quasiparticles in a superconducting tunnel junction is developed. The charge fluctuations are shown to have a significant contribution from partition noise that arises from the quantum superposition of the electron and hole character of the quasiparticles. These fluctuations are dominant at small bias voltage. The charge fluctuations are compared to the u...
متن کاملSubgap biasing of superconducting tunnel junctions without a magnetic field
Superconducting tunnel junctions STJs have been successfully used as single-photon detectors but require the use of a magnetic field to operate. A recent paper has proposed the idea to use a circuit of three junctions in place of a single junction in order to achieve the necessary biasing without applying a magnetic field. The nonlinear interaction between the different junctions in the circuit...
متن کاملThe Suppression of Phonon induced Noise in Niobium Superconducting Tunnel Junction X-ray Detectors
An investigation into the phonon contamination of X-ray sensitive superconducting tunnel junctions arising from the X-ray photoabsorption in various substrates has been conducted. Results are presented on the design of a superconducting tunnel junction (STJ) which substantially reduces or even eliminates phonon induced noise from the substrate. Such noise is the predominant feature in X-ray spe...
